2006 Ford F250 Lariat with Integrated TBC having some issues. When I hook up to a new trailer, trip starts out fine but after a few minutes I get a beep and message center says trailer disconnected. Then it will be fine for a while. I have cleaned all terminals, verified good ground and wiring. When I get this message I also lose trailer lights. There are also times when I turn on the blinker or tap the brakes that it causes the beep and message. It is so intermittent I am having a hard time tracing. Yesterday I pulled the trailer with electric brakes and got the message 10+ times in 20 minutes and then on the way home it never acted up. If I plug the boat trailer (different trailer) into the 7 pin I dont have an issue as this trailer has surge brakes. This is leading me to think my issue is within the TBC itself.
I'm not an expert but I'm more leaning towards a problem w/ the trailer, check your grounds to start. If the lights always work w/ the boat trailer I don't think it's the truck wiring - if everything worked on the first trailer but the brakes I might go for the bad controller, so far as I know the lights should work regardless. My guess is that you're intermittently losing the ground which causes everything to go haywire. Hopefully one of the trailer gurus will chime in.
Can you try this trailer w/ another truck or can you try another known working trailer on your truck to isolate?
Had another truck with no TBC hook up to trailer and never lost the lights in 40 mile trip (I followed behind). It is a very strange issue and the first thing I thought was ground but it appears to be fine. I have a standalone brake controller off my last truck that I was going to put in my work van to try and narrow down further.
Check the ground wire on the trailer side. Some trailer manufactures leave the wire out and the ball does not make a very good ground. Depending on the age of the trailer, corrosion will attack where the wire is on the frame and make a poor ground.
I just went through trailer wiring issues. And that's the first place I'd look. My truck hooked to my trailer had no blinkers, brake lights but had running lights. My friends truck had brake lights and left blinker while the right blinker caused hazard lights. Both ford trucks with clean plugs. Turned out to be some grounds... Funny thing was my buddy's truck only did the hazards intermittently. While mine had its issues constantly.
