Pretty sure the bare wire is to help suppress stray EMP from the 120v injector signals. Stick a multimeter on there, it should be grounded at the IDM end.
There are no strain relief wires under our hood. That is a completely burned up wire, with a melted connector. I thought it was the 9-pin at first, but now I see it's for something else. What has a 5-pin connector? I can think of only a few things that use the juice capable of melting a bigger wire like that - IAH, glow plugs, and fuel bowl heater.
