I had my original oil bath air cleaner off of my 55 tonight since I removed the carb. The oil in the air cleaner was very dirty and black. I don't know when it was last changed. So I dumped the old oil out. There was sludge at the bottom of the air cleaner. I cleaned it out.
Then I thought maybe I should clean up the outside and paint it. So I wiped off the grease then used Simple Green to clean it up. It was so nice I don't have to paint it. No before pics. It's hard to handle my phone with oily hands.
No. I guess I should. The shop maual says to clean it out with a solvent. Would kerosene be OK?
Yes, kerosene would be fine. It's a great solvent, albeit flammable, and it evaporates readily. You will probably get a lot of sludge from the maze too. This could increase your gas mileage a little.

Every time I see an oil bath air cleaner it reminds me of the 63 Ford unibody truck I bought from a coworker in 1974. Paid $50 for it because it smoked and would not pass smog here in CA. Found that the wing nut was missing on the air cleaner stud which allowed the air cleaner to move around and spill oil into the carb. Cleaned it up, installed a new wing nut, and smoke was gone. Amazing how much better the original equip works when clean and secure!

Wow, $50 for a unibody all for the price of a wingnut!
The same kind of oil bath on my 54 F100 in 1999 was rusted and peeling so I had to get blasted and I painted it. It just shows you how well kept this 55 F350 is. I will look for pictures of my 54 air cleaner before I painted it.
When they serviced and cleaned from my memory of doing a few, seemed like you would end up with oil everywhere. More oil than shop towels in my garage and would just keep wiping the oil off the filter as best as I could.
