When my u-joints are "squared" to the ball joints I have about 1/4" clearance on top and about 1/8" clearance on bottom. With the axle engaged and the u-joints turning they just barely clear the bottom ball joint stud, and the top has about 1/8" clearance.

Well that makes me feel a bit better, Ive got about 1/4" after rebuild, new ***** Joints, New drive shaft, bearings etc...... Need to rotate after I get it off jacks to really see where it finally sits with steering and rotation...
I never really paid it much attention until your post and I went out and took a look. I was somewhat surprised to see the bottom ball joints do not even use a castle nut/cotter pin, but there is simply not enough space to do so.
