Standard transmission

I'm looking at a 2000 F-250 V10 ZF5 4X4 CCSB 3:73for a DD and towing a 5k TT , I haven't had a manual transmission since my 77 F-250.
That was a long time ago, I've read the ZF5 is pretty stout. Does anyone have any comments on towing with a standard transmission, I know the V10 is plenty powerful.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Are you sure it is a ZF5 and not a ZF6? I thought the V10 and diesel came with the ZF6 and the ZF5 was in the 5.4 gas trucks. Either way both are stout transmissions, the ZF6 has a 26,000 lb GVWR and is a great transmission to tow with.

Thanks, seller says a 5 speed, I'm guessing it's a ZF5.

Does it have L,1,2,3,4, O/D on the shifter? That would be a ZF 6 speed, some people may call it a 5speed with a Granny gear.

Let it spool up, don't bog the engine down when you're pulling with it. The V10 makes it's power way up high in the RPM range, and if you drive it like an old carbed 351 and don't let it go over 4k you probably won't be happy with the power output. So row the gears up however feels good, even if it's higher RPM than you feel like it needs to be to keep it from bogging right after the shift.

Let it spool up, LOL I don't think it has a turbo.

No, I do mean spool up the gasser. The modular series runs higher rpms to make their maximum power output, compared to a contemporary MY2000 like a Chevy L29 big block. If you put a 454 and 6.8 dyno chart side by side the V10 hit its torque peak earlier than the 454 because it's undersquare, but peak HP is 500rpms higher on the 6.8.

Most people that I hear unhappy with the pulling power of the 5.4L or old 2V V10 in a Super Duty are using the base 3.73 gears with an automatic transmission; it's counter intuitive to some people that 3000-3500rpm is "bogging the engine", but you're leaving the top 30-40HP on the table by not pushing the engine up to the 4500rpm range. So the OP, with his manual, should spool up the gasser those last 500-1000rpm using his stick shift.

Spooling is when your turbo starts to build boost, you can't spool up a non turbo engine. I think revving would be a better term.

Ahh. Ok. Well..... he should let it "rev" then. Does that tickle your fancy a little better there?

Thanks Td, I knew/know what you meant.
I have a 5.4 2v , 2500 rpms it starts making ponies.
I doddled around and missed the truck.
Very much appreciate your statements.
My concern is towing 5k+ TT with a 4r70 in the Rockies, the 5.4 does the job pretty good and have not had any issues but thought the upgrade would be nice. As for the nomenclature police, we'll be revving it up.

My previous truck was a '99 with the 7.3 and ZF6. I can't comment on towing with the gasser, but I had the pilot bearing go out at around 100k miles. That took out the bearing on the ZF6 input shaft requiring a complete tranny teardown. I view that pilot bearing as one of the few weak links on the truck (accelerator pedal and camshaft position sensor were other two). I replaced mine with a bronze bushing, that just doesn't seem like a good place for needle bearings...
