How are the 5 speed manuals in the 2000 F250 with a V10? Do they last fairly long before an average rebuild? And what is usually the first thing to go wrong or to look for while test driving one?

Also how well does the 4 speed auto do?

The 5-speed behind a V10 is a pretty rare beast.

I would assume that since ZF makes both the defunct 5-speed and the current 6-speed, looking at the 6-speed's reliability would give you a good estimate of the reliability of the 5-speed. However....a 6-speed V10 is just as rare.

The auto is adequate for most tasks. It does have its weaknesses though when pushed hard.

Wow! I did not realize how rare they are. Are they pretty awesome for towing or do they have weaknesses for towing? Also are they geared super low in which you shift at like 10 mphs? Thanks for the replys so far!

Ratios

1st - 5.72
2nd - 2.94
3rd - 1.61
4th - 1.00
5th - .76

1st is pretty low and is appropriately labelled "L".

2th through 5th ratios are lower then the 4-speed auto. Would be a good mix with a 3.73 rear end for general use.

I have a 99 with the 5 speed mated to the V10. The main reason I bought the truck when I did is the manual tranny. I love a manual tranny and my wife has no problem driving it either. Now Let me tell you a little of my story (hope you have some time, this is gunna be a book.)

I bought the truck with 96k on it, I have owned it almost 6 months and have only had it in my possession for less than 9 weeks. All the rest of the time the dealer has had it. They have had the tranny out 3 times and put just shy of $5400 into it in parts and labor.

When I bought the truck, my only complaint was it would grind when I tried to shift down from 3rd to 2nd. Every other gear, up or down was fine, it was just when shifting from 3rd to 2nd. So, since it came with the usual cheesy 1000 mile warranty I took it right back and complained. They took the tranny out to replace the 2nd gear synchro and after having it a month called me and said it had more bad parts in it than they expected but it was finally done.
At this point the dealer had put $3100 in parts and labor into it. I picked it up and drove it about 150 miles and the tranny just stopped shifting, it wouldn't go into any gear. They came and got it with a flat bed and left me a taurus to drive. Let me tell you its hard to fit my yamaha rhino in the trunk of that taurus and even harder to haul 15 cord of wood 10 miles in the trunk of a taurus. Ok after 3 weeks they called and it was done. This time they put $900 into it. I picked it up, drove it home and after about 200 miles, same thing, would no longer shift. So they came up again and got the truck and left me the taurus. This time they picked it up on 5/28 and I got it back on 6/29 so they had it another month. Now I have only had it a couple days but it seams to shift ok now. I did tell the service manager that if it happened again I would probly come in pretty pissed off so he is forwarned. The service manager said the main problem they had was the manual tranny is so rare that they don't have alot of experience working on it and they had it shimmed wrong the first two times.

I love a standard shift truck, I just hope my saga is over and I can just drive the thing now. Good news is I put 3600 miles on their taurus that I didn't put on my truck..

Ok that sounds like a mess i had with my ford dealership here about 2 years ago with some brake issues! When test driving it should i look for a slip or just a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd as well as the downshift? Also with yours do you start out in 2nd?

That's the first time I've heard of issues with the 5 speed.... I think it is the exception rather than the rule?

And yes, exceptionally rare to find a V10 with 5 speed.... I looked and had to settle for automatic. Properly maintained, they are pretty darned good. And common enough that they can be beefed up to handle a LOT.

Yes it has been a total mess. I think its finally fixed though it has been shifting great. When I initially test drove it all I noticed was it would not down shift from 3rd to 2nd unless it was totally stopped. Other than that it seamed to shift perfect up and down. As was mentioned by mwsf250 I think I am the exception. Part of the reason I wanted a 5 speed so bad is I thought they were more reliable than an automatic. I plan on keeping this truck until the wheels fall off it so I want reliability and I did not want the expense of rebuilding an auto tranny in the future.

Yes when I take off I always start off in 2nd. I was starting off in first but first is so low, If I was pulling off a side street in first, I would need to shift before I got across the center line on the main road. Its very very low in first gear.
Even with the problems I have had I would not trade it for an automatic. Im a standard person, I have always liked them.
