This is my first attempt at participating in any sort of forum, so please try not to laugh too hard. I currently own a 1999 F250 Superduty with 615,000 miles. I'm on the second engine (5.4L V8) and transmission. The current engine has 312,00 miles on it. As with any older truck with this many miles there are the usual noises you hear going down the highway. It still has the original differential which is now beginning to whine. At this point I don't think investing in another engine and tyranny would be the prudent move because I use this truck as my primary work vehicle. I pull a 5000 lb utility trailer EVERYWHERE I go. I have recently come across a 1999 F250 Superduty 4WD with the V10 engine. It has 112,000 miles and appears to be well maintained. It is currently on a dealership lot. I have found mostly positive comments on the V10 on this forum. The main reason I'm here is to ask for comments on what I might look for to determine if this truck is sound. Anything would be appreciated.
I'm not terribly familiar with the inner workings of the V10, so I can't help with what to look for, but I will warn you that they're gas hogs. Be prepared for that if you pull the trigger.
They are gas hogs, but I'm willing to bet your 5.4 doesn't get great mileage either. The 99 v10's are a little different than the other 2valve v10's as they don't have the updated PI heads and the truck in general may be hard to determine what parts you need depending on the build date. That being said, it is a great engine and will be as reliable as the 5.4 you would be replacing. The v10 is just a 5.4 with 2 more cylinders. If the truck fits your needs and is in good enough shape for you at a good price, I would not hesitate. Let us know if you pick it up and post a pic if possible.
Normally I'd tell you that you need 4.30s to be happy with the non-PI 2V V10 power, but if you're 615k miles into a 2V 5.4L you seem very content with what you have, so it'll probably be an upgrade.
The next thing I would normally say is don't trust a 20 year old truck as a primary work vehicle... but again, you're doing it and seem fine with it. I'd personally try to find something about fifteen years newer with a 6.2L though.
Check the oil level on it, warm it up, and check the trans fluid level. If either is off walk away, if the dealer can't even be bothered to check the fluids on a known oil burner and a transmission susceptible to overheating, there's something lurking you don't want to deal with. Neither of those points are knocks, it's just a pretty well-known point after 20 years that V10s can suck a quart of oil in 1,000 miles of hard work, and the 4R100 can overheat if you get into higher weights and don't pay attention. You have one, you get it.
