Looking at a 1999 F-250 SUPER DUTY XLT 4X4, lifted with what looks like 35s. Anyways whats a high miles on this engine? Also what should I look for with this truck and this engine?
I have 173337 miles on my 10 burner and 4r100 tranny and neither of them show any signs of slowing. 3.73 gears are easier on the tranny as higher gears typically are, resulting in longer tranny life. My mechanic (family friend of 20+ years and a straight shooter) said he wouldn't be surprised if my engine lasted another 100k miles or more if I kept the maintinance up on it. Regular oil changes and occasionally check-ups will make this engine last longer than anything else on the truck. Plus, they sell really cheap right now (because re-sell value is poor because of image) so you probably are getting a good deal on it, and if you are planning on keeping the truck then you will definately come out on the good end of things. The v-10 is a sure way to get a BSEG... just make sure it's been kept up and it could last you 250k-300k easily.
My truck's V10 only has about 60K miles on it now but it runs strong and have not had any problems. I change the oil consistently and have changed the plugs recently too. So far it's a flawless motor. As for the truck itself, they are good solid vehicles and fairly easy to work on. As sglynx1 said, they are easier to come by right now because of the stigma attached to owning a big V10. Honestly though the fuel economy is not much worse than my old F250 that had the Triton V8. Good luck.
I own a '99 SD 2WD v-10 odometer turned 236,000 yesterday and have never had any problems.Best truck I have ever had and plan on getting another 100,000 miles on it..I wish I could get the same milage out of my windshield!! Damn rock haulers need to tarp there loads! Good luck with your purchase,Jim
The only problem I have had with my 99 V-10 is the exhaust manifold bolts snapping off. So, I would recommend driving it and listening for any exhaust leak sounds and possibly look to see that all studs are still intact. They are fun to drive!!
I don't know how many times a four-wheeler is under my tailgate of my Mack. Hang back 2-3 hundred feet like you should and you'd still have a windshield.
This is my first V10 super duty...an I ablosutely love it...you probably won't mind the rougher ride these trucks typically have, coming from a Ranger...I had an older one and thought it rode a little rough, too. Gas economy may be a shock to your wallet, but you have to pay for the power...
My V10 has 133K on it now. I have had about 1/2 dozen COPS go bad over the years , one altenator and currently riding with a couple broken exhaust studs on manifold. Other than that it works fine. I consider it a good vehicle overall.
