ive been eyeballing excursions for a while now for a family vacation vehicle and so the wife will get off my a$$ about driving my dually when it snows. i have found an 05 EX EB 4x4 that just rolled 200K on the clock. normally that is enough mileage to scare me away but this is one clean truck. it was a business mans truck and all the maintenance records are available for me to see. the price for this truck is right around 6500. what would it cost if any of you have experienced to drop in a new crate v-10 or rebuild one or how many miles are left in the stock motor? being a v-10 im guessing its kinda like 100k on a 4 cyl so im not too worried about it and the body and all the suspension is nice and straight. i have no problems spending money on maintenance and preventative stuff as i drive an F350 diesel! thanks for your thoughts and suggestions......
Go down to the V10 forum and do a search on V10 engine replacement cost. That should answer you question, but I would say $3500-3000 for the engine and $1500-3000 for the tranny. But for no more than you would have in the truck I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it. The 5.4 is basically the same and I have a 2004 Expy with 217,000 on it. Just replaced the fuel pump other than that just spark plugs. This is my third high mileage 5.4 and never had any major repairs. Wouldn't think a V10 would be much different. Go for it!
Miles wouldn't scare me off - especially with that price! Sounds like you've done a preliminary inspection and it looks good. I'd check the fluids in the transmission and the xfer case to see how they look. Hopefully his records show regular oil changes and a couple of trans flushes by now.
for that priced i'd ship it over here, miles mean very little in todays age.
10 years ago i would have taken insurance out against engine/transmition failure (im not 100% sure you can do this in the US but you can get policies like this in the UK)
but the V10 does not get worked hard at all , even at 4-5000rpm its not straining at all.
get a decent mechanic (you trust) to check it over if your worried , but if its got all the bills , and all the recalls (if any) are done then i'd say it was a sure thing.
