I'm brand new and this is my first older truck. I bought it for a fun project and to improve my mechanical knowledge.
Last fall I was driving it around and got it stuck in one of my fields, it's my "putz around the farm" truck. And I think I striped the linkage in the steering column. Any tips on a quick diagnosis before I tear out the steering column and have a look? It only goes in drives forward, no reverse or park. Not even sure if it is in Drive as you can move the shifter freely without depressing the brake.
Check the transmission shift linkage where it connects to the selection lever on the transmission. There is adjustment there and the linkage may have slipped out of position.
I found the issue. Where the shift linkage rod connects to the transmission, there was a bolt that locks into the linkage, it had been dislodged. I loosened the bolt and moved it after lining it up with P and then re-tightened it. Must've dislodged when I got it stuck on a mound.
BTW older cars & trucks you did not need to depress the brake pedal to move the shifter and on some new stuff to release the emergency brake.
How did we all live this long with out all the safety crap! And don't get me started on self driving / parking, stopping cars and cameras.

Right?! It was all so simple back then. I've got a 2016 Focus and the thing blows my mind on all the computer stuff. I'm afraid to get curious about whats under the hood!
Agree, seems allot of new vehicles no longer have an accelerator cable, they've been replaced with a relay, of which I can't seem to get comfortable with.
I think they're ok. However, I googled it, and in all honesty, IDK where those are... Seriously really new at this!
I'm positive it was yanked out in the field, I was stuck over a mound, bottoming out back and forth.
I'm planning on starting a thread with the different issues I'm encountering and improvements I make. Kinda a build thread, but mostly a learning thread.
You can see the cab mounts by looking through the rear of the front wheel openings. Look for a sort of triangular-shaped box on the lower front of the firewall, in the vicinity of the frame rails. The mounts can look good from the outside, but be disintegrating from the inside. Or the bottoms of the mount 'box' can be rusted away, with the rubber isolator bushing pushing up through the box.
