Trans Question
I HAVE A 99 EXPLORER LIMITED 4.0SOHC EVERY TIME I PUT IT IN REVERSE IT SEEMS AS IF IT REVERSES TWICE MEANING IF I PUT IT IN REVERS ITMAKES THE ENGAGEMENT SOUND TWICE EVERY TIME.DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A MAJOR TRANS PROBLEM

is known to have valve body gasket problems. There are a couple areas where the bolt spacing is wider than ideal and loose bolrs cause the gasket to blow out. This can be repaired without transmission removal but is still about $800 at dealer. Try putting it in manual first and letting it coast down a hill. There should be evidence of strong engine braking and the tach should follow vehicle speed. If you keep going faster but the engine stays at idle, the problem is probably the gasket. Reverse is made from the high/reverse clutch (4th gear) and low/reverse band 1st and reverse). Most my valve body bolts were loose on my 97 when I checked and I bought a spare 99 transmission w/52K for parts that had the gasket blown out. So it can happen at an early age.
