Went out this morning to start the 86 to drive to work, cranked normally so i went to feed all the hounds and when i got in to go i heard a loud humming sound so i turned off the engine to investigate and it started trying to crank itself i jumped out and yanked the signal wire off the solenoid and it still kept cranking so i snatched the negative cables off. At this point i am sure the starter is fried but what would make it stick like that? It has not been doing anything out of the ordinary and always starts right up, also the whole starting system was replaced in December 2017
When you replaced the whole starting system did that include battery and starter cables? I know the cables on my f250 are OE and they're pretty sad. While this may not have caused the problem you experienced it's one of those things that can be replaced as a MAW.
I did do all the cables as well, bought a ready made 2/0 positive cable and made my own 2/0 negative cables. I bought a new nippondenso pmgr starter today to replace the mitsubishi it has now, hopefully the solenoid on the old starter is just stuck and i havent messed up something else
FWIW, you can use an 8" bolt and nylon insert nut to secure the top of the starter. This will make it easier to remove in the future. I used a 6" bolt and nylon insert nut when I replaced my Mitsubishi starter and it was a bit short.
