I have what I would describe as a milky residue on the side windows on older vehicles (2000 & 2001) that does not come off. You can still see through it OK but very annoying. It also has vertical streaks from rolling up & down over the years.
What will get rid of it? And how to get rid of it? PLEASE!!
That is most likely actually scratches from super fine dust getting behind/under the weather stripping that rubs on the glass at the bottom of the window. I've been told replace the glass and keep the strip clean. I use a dry toothbrush and compressed air to clean the inside of that strip or flap.
IT SEEMS THAT WHAT IS SCRATCHED IS SOME KIND OF COATING PUT ON THE GLASS. "I've been told replace the glass and keep the strip clean" . . . eeesh didn't want to go to that expense. It's my huntin'/campin'/toolin' around puddle jumper. Thanks
Agree with Jim, Just cleaned my windshield with 0000 steel wool and peroxide, then hit it with Windex and then the water hose. Then applied 2 coats of Rain X. Looks good!
As Jim said, try 0000 steel wool without any sort of liquid. Dry steel wool will do wonders to clean windows. I have been using this method for years with great results.
Here is my driver's side window for comparison. I can see out of it just fine, but the haze of scratches is pretty extensive.
Probably take more time to polish out than to replace. If anyone does try polishing, would love to see before and after pics, methods, and how much time it took to do.
Sounds like a common problem with tint. Is that window tinted?
Assuming your question is in follow-up to my window pic, it does have a tint film on the inside surface. The scratches in the pic are on the outer glass surface.
Ba Careful about using Magic Eraser on glass, I know someone who used it on their Pool Water Line Tile, and it severely scratched it.
Yes, Magic Erasers are abrasive which is why they actually remove stuff. But they leave scratches and marks on most materials. I did use one on a sunburned dash once followed with Aerospace 303 and it cleaned off all the sunburn and no visible scratches.
