I bought a 1993 F-150 4x4 with a 5-speed and 300 engine a few months ago. The slave cylinder quickly blew out on it. I put in a new clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and slave cylinder. I also changed the input shaft seal and plugged the 3 holes in front of the shifter. The truck drove great after that and I've put about a 1,000 miles on the new clutch with no issues. However, yesterday while driving home, I downshifted from 4th to 3rd and when I released the clutch the engine just revved. I stepped on the clutch again and moved the stick again but the engine still just revved. I was able to coast to the side of the road. I tried all the gears and nothing happened. I got under the truck expecting to see fluid everywhere but there wasn't any. I pulled out the plug to look at the slave cylinder and everything was dry. I got a tow home and afterwards tried it again. It takes off now but I cannot get going faster than 20 mph and the engine revs to high RPM. Any ideas?
Thank you for the suggestion! I was so single-minded, I couldn't think of anything other than the clutch. It did turn out to be the transfer case. I tried switching from 2WD to 4hi and 4lo, but couldn't. I ended up pulling the transfer case and only found about a cup of fluid in it.....fluid that looked like it had a lot of glitter in it... After opening it, I decided to go to a junkyard and get another. I'm still surprised I never heard a sound from the transfer case and even more surprised it could still limp up to 20mph! Now I just need to figure out how to tell when one needs rebuilt. Thanks again!
