Tru Cool 7.3 Help

Hey everyone I just bought a 02 7.3 with 100k and after putting gauges on it I need to get a new Transmission cooler for obvious reasons. This might be a dumb question but I can’t find it in any threads. I’m gonna get the tru cool max but don’t want to run it in series with the stock cooler. I want to simply replace the stock with the true cool. Reading all the directions I can find army very clear. Is it as simple as just replacing it or do I have to mess with thermal bypass and stuff? I live in Colorado so it does get cold. Thanks everyone!

Welcome, where in Colorado are you? I removed the stock cooler completely and put the Dorman 6.0 cooler in its place. I also removed 90% of the Steel line and plumbed in a fluid thermostat when I did the cooler.

Remove the old cooler, then install the new cooler. You will have to fab up couple of mounting brackets with the provided hardware. No need to play with the bypass.

I Have the same truck. Towing in the Summer in CO and NM mountains would send my tranny into over temp. I went with the Tru Cool 4739. I kept the old cooler in line. Didn't know any reason not to. It's been close to ten years now with zero problems. And boy, does it work well. Good luck with it. It's not a very difficult install.

I went with a 6.0 cooler and have never looked back. Bought it used (not recommended) but I guess I got lucky - for once at least.

I am curious as to the benefit of deleting the existing cooler. In my case I didn't because I couldn't see any benefit and it seemed two coolers was better than one. But is there something I'm missing like fluid resistance?

The 918-216 cooler uses the trucks OEM mounting points while the cooler itself is several times larger than the original.

Two coolers are generally thought to be too restrictive to fluid flow. You have 2002 I believe which already has a cooler in the radiator which is a great help. Adding a third in-line may not be a great idea.
