I have an aftermarket trans cooler of some kind. Im not happy with my temps and want to get them lower. The 6.0 cooler is a great option but for $300 its a little pricey. Every post Ive read states the tru-cool is put in sequence with the stock cooler. Since I dont have a stock cooler I was going to remove the aftermarket cooler thats in there now and have only the tru-cool. Is this a good option? Does the install kit from dieselsite come with the parts I would need? Would I get enough cooling with ONLY a tru-cool 4739MAX?
Is the aftermarket cooler mounted in place of the stock cooler between the a/c condenser and intercooler? The TruCool is considered an "low pressure drop" cooler, IIRC, and should not be restrictive in mounted in a series with other coolers.
The current aftermarket cooler is mounted on the front of the a/c condenser. I would like to remove that one and use the tru-cool.
Then, you should already have the stock cooler in the radiator and the stock oil-to-air trans cooler behind the condenser. It would be a simple swap of the aftermarket one, up front, with the TruCool. This is what I have now. Works great.
Running the Tru-Cool alone is how I am set up now. I wanted to compare temps between the stock set up, and the TruCool alone. My test was towing my travel trailer to Destin FL on vacation and back to TN.
Last year using the stock set-up only, temps got as high as roughly 195-197 degrees. Thats towing, fully loaded, 100* degrees ambient temp. This year running the Tru-Cool only and under essentially identical conditions, the highest trans temp I saw was about 175-177.
So, pretty good. That being said, I am still going to go back and re-route the lines so that I run the TruCool inline with the stock set-up, just to push it down a few more degrees.
And yes, the Powerstroke kit that Dieselsite offers is useful.
No, the power steering cooler is tiny...besides I just did a flush on it and had it unhooked.
It is definately a trans cooler. I am not familiar with 2 trans coolers that seem to be mentioned here?? I assumed there was only one?
There is a stock oil to water cooler in the end of the radiator, and a stock oil to air cooler between the AC condenser and the charge air cooler. If it is in front of the condenser, it is definitely an aftermarket cooler.
If you don't have anything yet, I'd just watch for a 6.0 cooler to pop up on ebay, sometimes they go for a reasonable price. Or just go with two 4739 coolers up front and be done with it.
