Clark 285 issues

Looking for some advice for a Clark 285 that is stuck in 2nd gear. This is in a 1969 N700. The shifter has a what I would consider, an excessive amount of play. Was shifting into third and the lever went past its normal spot and stuck there. I did not want to force it, so I limped home in second. Is it the best way to get it unstuck to remove the shifter from the transmission? And, what would be needed to get the shift linkage less sloppy so this can be avoided in the future?

Thank you for any and all advice

Spring and adjusting bolt/plunger were just flopping around.

Pretty sure this is most or all of the problem. Question is now, where to get another spring? Found a spring on eBay with an engineering number of C8TZ-7234-B, looks like it is the right one but ?????

Clark 285-VO:

Ford part number: C8TZ-7234-B (replaced C8TZ-7234-A) .. Spring - Shift Interlock & Gear Shifter Shaft Lock Plunger / 23/64" O.D. x 1 11/32" free length with 9 coils / Obsolete

4th digit of engineering number prefix would not end with a Z

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 52 = 800-543-4959.

Thank you for the help Bill, greatly appreciated. I am really struggling trying to decipher the master parts list. I did buy a pdf version and it is tough searching on a 13 inch laptop. I do have a question though. When looking at the illustration (section 70.5), it shows number 7219 as the spring I need. When you cross reference to the parts list you get 7EQ-7219 or C8TZ-7219-A. How do you know which one it is as they are different dimensions? The number you listed above is for the plunger springs, are they the same as the low/reverse spring? Also, from time to time, when you mention a part number in a post, you will also note that it has been replace by another part number. How does a guy get that information???? Thank you again, and sorry for all the questions, just trying to get my head around the ford parts lists.

You need an O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) catalog. The one I usually use is dated 1/1991 and it's on microfiche.

The C8TZ-7234-B spring is listed in the text section of the catalog, but it's not shown in the pic.

Your TRANS code is M .. See upper pic, notice the parts list is 9J

Now, look at the lower pic for parts list 9J .. Notice that 7EQ-7219 is not listed, but C8TZ-7219-A is.

Low & Reverse Gate Plunger Spring:

7EQ-7219 = 1/2" O.D. x 1 9/16" free length.

C8TZ-7219-A = 9/16" O.D. x 1 23/32" free length with 9 1/2 coils. 50+ available NOS

Click on pics twice to enlarge them (necessary w/a 13" laptop!). I used to have a 18 1/2" laptop, but when it died, I couldn't find another, so now I have a desktop w/a 27" screen.

Ok, this explains a lot. I did not understand the "parts list" portion of the search. Makes better sense now, but I am going to need a lot of practice.

On a completely different note, I ran into this truck in a field not to far from my home. It is not running and looks like it had an electrical fire at one point in its life. Surprisingly it is an N700, and looks to be near the same year as my truck. Here is the id tag, but to test my master list feeble skills, would a transmission code of "2" be a Clark 282V?
Was thinking of making an offer on the truck. The glass, and brake parts, (if serviceable) would be gold. It even has a factory tach.

N700 box truck in a field.
1969 N700 assembled in Louisville KY but it was ordered from the Western Ford Division of Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd.

So, at some point...it came across the border to WA where I presume it is now.

2 = 1968/72 Clark model 282V 5 Speed Direct.

btw: The cab is essentially the same as 1961/66 F100/1100. All the weatherstrips have been reproduced, but the repro parts sellers only list them for 1961/66 F100/350's.

The N series doors are cut out at the front, but ALL the internal parts are the same as 1961/66 F100/1100, as are the weatherstrips.

I am headed out for work tomorrow, (on the road) and won't be back home for a few months so will have to stop work on the dump truck until my next break. I will continue to practice on the ol Ford Master parts list though,, as always,,,, thanks for your help Bill!
