The newer model explorers have those mirrors that have the light built in so that when you turn your blinker on, the corresponding red arrow will light up and blink in the mirror, as an added safety feature.
Mine is a 2000 explorer but I would love to put some of those newer kind of mirrors on there...I have power mirrors now.
Anybody done something like this??
I know it could be done...I suspect that, if all else failed, you could splice the wires in yourself...looks like all it would need is the wires to control the power mirror part (which might be cross model compatible) and then the hookup for the blinker part...it must just hook into your blinker wire to get power.
what kinda mirror's are you talking about?
the mirror's an the 03-04 explorer's are the same as your truck's they have been the same sense 1995 could it be you where looking at a 03 expy?
There is a product you can stick to your existing mirrors and splice into your directional signal lights. They are called Nextlight Turn Signal Mirror Lights, and I found them on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2434264899
Another, but more involved method is to:
1. buy the nextlights from ebay
2. remove the mirror from the head
3. Cut a "V" into the black plastic that holds your mirror
4. mount the nextlights with epoxy
5. reinstall mirror onto head unit and wire into harness.
This is more involved but LOTS cheaper, and works just a well.
The LEDs will show through the mirror.
If you download the installation instructions from Muth (Page 8), you will see that there is quite a bit of room between the mirror and the Housing. The nextlights are about 7/16" thick, subract 1/16" inch depth for the plastic holding the mirror on, and you only have to worry about 3/8" of protrusion. Lots of room...
I don't know if the 02-03 Explorers have the factory lights. I've seen them around, but since Muth makes them for Ford, It's hard to tell it they were a factory option or aftermarket.
The only way you can tell is if you can view them with the vehicle stopped I'd say. The factory ones and the aftermarket ones look identical just to see the vehicle going down the road.
I did the same thing on my 2000 explorer and let me tell you...WHAT A PAIN!!!!!!
Installing the Muth mirrors on my 02 explorer was relatively easy, except that I never could find the blinker wires in my wiring harness anywhere, so I had to end up slicing a wire in right at my front blinker and running the wire from there. But, snapping the actual mirror into my old mirror housing was damn easy compared to my old explorer....
On my 2000 explorer..forget it! I broke one of my mirrors trying to switch them out. It is VERY tricky getting the old mirror out, and even MORE tricky trying to reseat the new signal mirror into place. There's virtually no room to work with and you have to try and make those yellow ***** pop back into place....grrrrrrrrrrrrr! On my 02, there is ONE notch..you just pry on it with a screwdriver and the mirror pops right off...then the signal mirror pops right back on...no ***** and motor arms to deal with, very easy!
I placed the Signal Mirrors on my Mountaineer from MUTH SYSTEMS and they were pretty easy to install plus it looks like that factory look too. Good Luck!
