Pinging noise upon acceleration

There are a number of things to check that you can do before taking it to the shop. However, let me say up front that pinging is the result of timing being more advanced than the octane rating of the fuel. Its probably not the fuel at fault but because of mechanical problems in the engine, that's the result. You could look to see if there's any restriction in the intake tract or in the exhaust system. Clogged catalytic converters are typical of lost power complaints but not necessarily with pinging.
It makes a difference whether you have the V6 or V8 engine. The V8 has a lot more complicated valve train that has been known to cause trouble.
