I have an 02 exp. ltd with a 6 cyl. When cold it has a ticking noise under exceleration. I am leaning toward an exhaust leak but have heard of plugs blowing out. I recently replaced the stock plugs with bosch platinum 4's thinking it was a spark knock. This didn't cure. Any suggestions?
Does it 'tick' if you are in neutral and give it RPMs? If so, then it could be valve train or timing chain related. Could the noise be a 'ping' as in octane related when under power?

Thanks for the reply. It usually makes the noise when cold and I don't notice it in neutral with increased RPM. I thought the same thing with a possible octane ping but it goes away when the engine warms up. This is also why I went to the bosch platinum 4's. They cured my 4.6L in my 150 of spark knock running 87 octane. The noise comes under acceleration either from stand still or at speed and when the engine warms up it goes away.

Reason: not a full description of the problem
Check the DPFE hoses. When I replaced my DPFE sensor I forgot to hook up the hoses and heard the ticking noise you are describing. I've heard of these melting off before. Also could be the infamous timeing chain rattle.

Interestingly enough I recently changed the DPFE. I didn't notice any problems in the tubing. Would the timing chain rattle go away after the vehicle warms up? Thanks for the reply.
Could be a small leak in the connection between the y-pipe and the exhaust manifold. Heat causes things to expand therefore sealing th e leak. Have some one plug your tailpipe with a peice of wood while you check all the connections.
