Ok, now when i hammer on it, i have a knock. It sounds like my chevy did when i shifted to soon. I will have to check the timing again. It seems a little sluggish. could i have the carb set to lean and be causing a spark knock because of not enough fuel. It's not constant, only at certain times during acceleration. Could the timing be off cause this. I finally got the dang valve train noise figured out, now it's onto the next issue. Help me please.
No, it's not the same. The knock before is now gone. I'm guessing it just took some time to get oil to the entire engine. It's almost like a dead spot in the throttle and once i get through it, I don't hear it anymore.
Has to have a load. It sounds like a manual tranny that was shifted to soon. My inexperience tells me either the kickdown is not engaging, or the motor is not getting enough fuel.
OK, it is knocking when i put it and drive and power brake it. It starts knocking just barely into the throttle. I can hear it a little bit. I'm going to check for bent push rods tonight. I'm going to put the original push rods back in. Any other ideas?
Strange that it's knocking so easily...that is leading me to believe it's more serious then a detonation issue(timing).
If you can narrow the noise down, you can pull a spark plug at each cylinder and see if knock goes away. This unloads the rod bearing(since it's not firing) and will usually eliminate the knock. This will pinpoint a more serious issue.
If it was pushrods...it would be lighter tick(like you heard before), not a knock.
I retarded the timing and most of it has gone away. I now feel safe to drive it to the base to use a timing light. It is possible the remainder is an exhaust leak. Have to work hard to hear it.
