A 7.3 with 4.30 gears, what size tires will be going on the rebuilt beast?
All the work so far looks great, keep the nice pics coming!

4.30s gives me options.

4.30s with 37" tires work out to be about the same as 3.73s with the stock tires. I was really on the fence between 4.10s and 4.30s, then when it came time to order, the 4.30s were like $100 cheaper.

Anybody need some used 3.73s?

You made the right choice, in my opinion.

6" lift on 37x18's on my '99 in the sig with 4.30.

Nice, you aren't just converting to 4X4, you are entering that game with a lift and big tires!

I have both the 2001 7.3 4x4, and a 2010 Wrangler JKU 4x4. The all stock Wrangler in 4 low will aggressively crawl nearly vertical at idle, while the 6" lifted Excursion with 35 x 12.5 tires, and factory diffs/axles barely moves. Gear ratio characteristics are something I know very little about. Are your 4.30s giving you that better low RPM torque?

Thanks for the friendly feedback, folks. The project is a bit slow going - between work, family, etc. Also it seems about every third day I work on it I discover I need another part. I'm definitely not the first person to work on this front axle. The u-joints had been previously replaced (can tell from the hammer marks) and some one forgot to put the fiber vacuum washer behind the hub on one side.

Yes the higher numeric gear will give you better pulling at lower RPMs at the expense of topend speed and fuel economy. If the gear/tire combo is selected properly it should be a wash. It will never be a rock crawler like your JKU because the transfer case has no low range.

More to come - we'll be bringing the rear axle into the shop soon!

The EX transfer case does have a Low range, it may not be reduced as deeply as the Jeeps but it is significantly lower than High range. I use my Low range for reversing the big TT all the time, makes life easier on the 4R100 and helps to prevent overheating the front seal and the resulting fluid leak.

Distracted because you were explaining the reasons for using a synthetic blinker fluid to the wife?

The donor is still shedding parts!

Still need to get the trackbar bracket off the frame.

Rebuilding drive shafts!
Started with these 200k mi units:

Rear shaft torn down and cleaned - new parts waiting.

Here we are with the two u-joints installed - one at the driveshaft yoke and the other at the flange yoke.

Center ball installed in the flange

Seal installed on the center ball

More to come!
