Hey guys I hope you are having a fantastic weekend. I was just wondering about locking center differentials. From what I have read the front and rear diffs are open right? Is the center diff locked and only locked in 4h and 4l? Or is it even locked at all?
Factory units don't "LOCK"... they are called LIMIT SLIP.......... there is a clutch pack tieing the left and right axle halfs together. They will drive together from the pinion, but can "slip" if needed to go around a corner. Normally you get a LS unit in the BACK, and the front end is not.
The transfer case, when engaged, puts power to the front and back driveshafts. It is a mechanical drive so "theoretically" you could say it is LOCKED. You get power to the front and back.... If the back tires are stuck in the mud and spinning, the front tires will continue to turn and pull thru.

Don't some Explorers have AWD or full time 4x4? If your transfer case has 2wd, 4x4 high, and 4x4 low then it is a part time only transfer case that locks the front and rear axles together when in 4x4, however if it has AWD or full time 4x4 it does have a center differential in the transfer case, and you can run full time 4x4 all the time if you want to but it will use more fuel.
