The alternator on my 92 5.0 went south. I have broken two quality sockets trying to get the lower bolt off so I can replace it. I'm sure that the bolt is a righ-hand thread, it threads into the aluminum mounting bracket so there is not a nut on the bolt (except maybe me). Can't figure out why the bolt is frozen. Anyone experienced the same problem or have suggestions. I have saturated it with WD40 to no avail. Or if I have to remove the alternator and mounting bracket as a unit can anyone tell me if the mounting bracket bolts go into the water jacket of the block?
Rich ,
All 3 bolts are left hand thread . The problem may be that the bottom bolt threads all the way back thru the lower part of the alternator , its about 6 to 8 in long . You have a steel bolt threaded into aluminum which Im betting is why its frozen . I dont think you can get to all the bracket bolts w/o removing the alternator so that bottom bolt has got to come out . I think they are 1/2 , 13mm in size ? Spray the bolt with some stuff called PB Blaster , both on the front and the back of the bolt . Get a breaker bar and new socket and try it again . It will break loose , just let the PB Blaster sit for 10 mins or so . You can buy it at most auto parts stores and I even think the Wal Market sells it too .

I'm currently in the same situation....PB, WD40, Liquid wrench...nothing budged it.
I used a breaker bar and socket....snapped the head of the bolt off.
I then subsequently used a breaker bar to snap the alternator off (not what I intended on doing...but that's what happened).
I'm now trying to remove the air pump so I can take the aluminum bracket out. I have the front upper boltbolt unthreaded but cannot currently get it out of the sleeve as it seems to be rusted in place somehow.
Just removed the radiator and have hit it with more Liquid Wrench.
What I need to know now is does anyone know where I might be able to get a new bracket in the event that I wind up destroying this one (by accident of course)?
