Other day temp gauge on dash stopped working. Tested the ect wire and got a reading of 5v. Tested the sensor to find out the sensor was bad. We got another 92 f150 5.0 efi motor that i knew the sensor was good. I pulled that the good one and replaced of the failed one. Now we got a working temp gauge on the panel.
After changing the sensor: Past few days driving for 20mins or so we would get the check engine light to come on. Sometimes it wouldn't. Now today the engine light comes on as soon as the truck is started. Pulled the code and the only code being #51.
Didn't know readers existed for this year, anyhow using a jumper wire.
I've attempted to pull the jumper wire as soon as the codes started. (After the 3 quick flashes) Which didn't change anything. Still got the engine light to come on. Which i sincerely doubt it was throwing a code for sensor signal is/was to high when the motor was cool.
Try pulling the jumper as soon as you start the test. Before you start getting codes. The FORD reader for OBD1 is the Inovva 341. Amazon or Ebay has them. Excellent reader for our trucks. Sandy

Is there a different method or????
Well, there are TWO temp sensors for these trucks. One for the dash and one for the computer. It's possible if you replace the dash one, the other one could be bad as well. Because the dash one won't throw a code, the gauge will just be wrong
Hrmmph? So the computer of the truck could be going bad? Didn't throw the light for a day prob after i changed the sensor out. There both 92 f150 XLT 5.0 efi motors however the dash cluster is different from the truck i pulled the working ECT from. (On the new truck, No rpm gauge, overdrive is on the dash cluster selector P/R/N/OD/D/1 instead of P/R/N/D/2/1"Overdrive on end of the gear selector arm" as it is on the old truck.)
Ill try pullin the jumper out as soon as i turn the key instead of waiting till the first three flashes.
