Hey everyone!
New to the ford truck scene (so please forgive my ignorance). I recently picked up a 96 f150 with the Mazda 5 speed with no soft **** 😓. I've seen alot of guys using pool ***** for shifters, and happen to have a new 8 ball laying around. Are pool ***** too heavy for a shift ****? Anyone here run into problems with jumping out of gear or faster shift fork wear? I'd also love to see what crazy shift ***** any of you guys have used. Show 'em if you got 'em!
thank you for your reply,
Good point about how heavy it is. Any searching i found was about the fork wear and 200 lb gorilla hands resting on the shifter. My truck was a maintenance truck at a mobile home park it's whole life, so it may very well need a 1-2 shift fork anyways. I already started drilling the bal, starting with a 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and finally a 3/8. I have one step left to drill, surprisingly it has gone very smoothly despite how rock hard it is. Fortunately for me my shift rod is straight with very fine splines, so once i get the size close enough, I'll just tap it in with a plastic hammer.
I think a better course of action would be to find a piece of plastic (I've seen Delrin used before) and dril and tap that. That will allow the plastic to take up the wear from being pushed around all day... if you just tap the **** onto the threads those threads will wear and having one loose ball is never a good thing....
The shaft is 1/2 with very fine splines. I thought it was threaded to at first from all the duct tape over it. I was originally going to epoxy a nut inside the **** and just screw it on.

Reason: Oops
A work friend of mine smashed his thumb with a hammer once, only to do it again three days later. All the blood blew out the end of his thumb. It looked like raw hamburger meat... anyways, ill have to wait until later today to drill the 1/2 hole, i only go up to 3/8 here at home. I'll post some pictures once i get it put on.
I'd love to make a **** out of wood, but I've always been a fan of stock looking *****. An 8-ball is acceptable; those skulls and fake grenades are what drives me nuts... however, I do have the shell of an old M67 grenade that would look pretty neat...
I used a dye and cut threads over the splines. It worked good going on 10 years.
Nice! That's one way to do it... The good thing about doing that is if you make it a standard size, now you have more options. Lol, i just got my truck, and i didn't want to mod anything before i finish repairing it. So, i figured I'd make something i could just put on and be done with it.

i completely agree... The 8 ball was an impulse buy from goodwill for 2.99 (new in the package!) and is towards the limit of what i would add. I personally like the "tasteful but not overdone" approach. I've seen grenade shells used as 4wd ***** before, and they look BA. A friend of mine used a caterpillar wrist pin for his 4wd, and that was pretty cool too.
Bought mine on Ebay ready to install. They have different numeral pool ***** also. Sandy
I like that. It's subtle and matches your interior well. Nice clean truck. I was also thinking of a striped 13, but the 8 was the right price at the right time.

Thanks. If yours doesn't work out here is the 13 ball for pretty cheap. Sandy
