Headers are in the near future. They got cut from the budget when I found out I had a cracked block .
Headers are the number one upgrade you can do to your truck. Increases horsepower while increases fuel economy. Factory FE exhausts for the most part are extremely restrictive. Of course there are always exceptions, like the factory 406 and 427 headers, and to some degree the sc and scj stock exhausts. I have had all of them at one time ore the other, and aftermarket headers are by far the best. Buy good "thick" headers like Hooker and Sanderson.
I hope Hooker has improved their quality in the past 30-something years cause the ones I had on my 67 Big block Stang were crap.
LOL... 67 was a million years ago. Most companies have their good, better, best line of products. Hooker has some nice headers if you are willing to pay for them.
The thin metal on some header flanges allowed them to warp after several cycles. I was still in the military in 67, Vietnam war. Not such a good year.
Got the motor installed on Thursday. Got it running good enough to break in the cam for 20 minutes. Tried to adjust timing and screwed it all up. Had to take two days away to take care of some other stuff. Sat am I got back to it, retimed it from the start, put a new cap, rotor, & wires on. Motor started up and purred. I initially adjusted the timing with a vacuum gauge and had it far to advanced. First drive resulted in a ton of pinging. I promptly eased it home and backed it way off. Next test drive was a success. The initial setup on the holley was a good match. Today I took it to emissions and it passed with flying colors. Now I can start to fatten up the mixture a little bit.
Unfortunately on the way home I had a little snafu with the cooling fans. I ran my main power wires for the fan control in the way of the big spring by the hood latch. I blew the main fuse on the way home from emissions and lost cooling. Luckily I realized it pretty quick. Limped it to the side of the road, didn't see any issues, so I assumed I sized my fuse too small for the cooling fan . Bypassed it to get home and all was well. Until I closed the hood. Luckily the only damage was a little wire, a battery terminal, & my pride!
Brought it home and switched it to the yellow secondary spring. The accelerator pump cam looks to be orange and on the #2 hole. Going to try moving it to the #1 hole and going up a jet size.
From here its headers and an msd 6al digital. Already got the pertronix kit in it.
