recentley moved and in the process i had my 89 f150 loaded up and driving an hour to my new place. halfway thru the trip my oil pressure drops dangerously low, i shut the truck off and pull over, checked the oil, it was low, added and kept going, 15 minutes later same thing happens. pull over again and wait 10 minutes, started to get going again, only a few miles to go, pressure drops again, i kept going. horrible knock develops as i get off the highway. i pull in the driveway with my girlfriend and her parents looking at my truck going WTF?! Im just glad it made it down here
i take it you have a 300 6 cyl , if the engine was hammering then you would need to have the crank turned and the rods resized or at least checked ! any engine that the rods took to knocking will beat the journals of the crank out of round and new bearings want last long , the bottom end of engines are the reciprocating mass and need to run true to the center line of the bore !
I wouldnt go from a 300 to a 302. If you're gonna do it go to a 351. If $$ is tight the cheapest thing would be a JY 300. As long as you ran it and he knock... I think you would be wasting time and $ with replacing rod bearings
i was thinking the 351 over the 302. wanted that little bit more power and the parts availablity. looked thru some online catalogs for everything i need for the swap, about $1200
Stick with the 300 buddy....I just talked myself OUT of the exact same swap....A good 300 I-6 will usually run 300-ish thousand miles without MAJOR issues; If correctly taken care of....
The v-8 swap just isnt worth $250 for the flywheel, engine mounts, wiring harness, etc...PLUS if the donor engine has issues to fix, to fix them will run anywhere from $100+...PLUS, the cost of the engine;$300+...
So there ya are buddy, a truck with no engine, and you're broke, and now not goin anywhere....Trust me...Just rebuild the 300...And if you're gonna do that, get the head redone, and the cylinder walls squared back up, just that will give it a smidge of oommphh....
I'm just sayin, you are already $600 in the hole, and probably still won't have it running....$600 in a I-6....Well, now thats an investment in my eyes....$600 will replace a LOT of the I-6 parts....
