I bought a clamshell holder for my cell phone. It uses a sticky surface to prevent sliding but I also use a gooey pad for additional adherence. I downloaded a free GPS App that is truly amazing. They claim the accuracy is 98% off-line which means you do not have to be connected to the Internet for it to work. The display is large and it allows me to see my speed without looking through the steering wheel. I have found it to be very accurate; I used it to calibrate my speedometer. It has a number of features like setting max/min speed, warning for over speed limit, etc.
I now have the classic look for show and the tech look for go.
Yes; I have an LG Android phone. The App is on Google Play under GPS speedometer. The Company name Is COOL NIKS; it has a 4.8 rating. So basically if you have a cell phone and a mount, you get a free speedometer. This has become one of my favorite Apps along with the endoscope App that allows me to peer into the nooks and crannies of the engine.
I’ve used these in tractor trailer driving for years and they are very accurate.Havent test my F1 yet but at the Interstate 5 test facility right out side of town I’ve run a 55 Buick century to 118, an 83 Suzuki GS1100 to140 and a 70 Dodge Superbee to 130.All in the name of speedometer calibration of course. They work great and have an easy to read display.

So to repeat for the non tech guys, myself included, you donwload the app and it works even if you do not have a data plan? Even if there is no cellphone coverage?

I'd assume yes. GPS doesn't rely on a cell network and I assume this is just calculating the distance traveled between satellite pings and displaying that velocity.
