Hey, folks - I posted this on the Transmission forum with no luck - hoping someone can help me here. I have a 1978 F250 with a Warner T18 transmission.
I got a mechanic to help me remove the yoke nut from with a high impact wrench. I locked first and third gear into place so he could get the nut off. Now, I can get first gear into neutral, but not third. And when I rotate the shaft, there's a kind of clunking noise and the gears bind up sometimes, but I can eventually play them loose again.
Any idea what's wrong? Am I looking at a busted bearing?
Never messed with one of those, but I'll guess that one of the other gears/forks/internal linkages isn't all the way in neutral.
Thanks, meangreen. I should rephrase... I've pulled the cover and can see down into the internals. I'm shifting the gears by hand. Fourth is just stuck. I think I'm going to have to take it somewhere to have it rebuilt.

If you're mechanically able, then I would rebuild it yourself, The T18s are pretty easy to rebuild, and can be done in a a few hours. But that also depends on tools availability. Shop Press, high quality snap/lock ring pliers, and bearing pullers are required aside from basic ratchet/socket set. I know when I priced locally having a Tremec T176 rebuilt, it was going to run about $700 if I brought the shop the trans. For $100 and a few hours I had it apart and reassembled. I can now tear down the T176 in under 30mins from start to finish.

I took it in for a free diagnosis, so we'll see what they have to say. I don't have a shop press or ring pliers or pullers or any of that. If the shop comes back with a crazy high number, I'll do it myself. I'm getting ready to move, so there are some time constraints (always). Thanks a million! I'll keep you posted.
