I have seen a C6 yoke at one site that says the shaft diameter is 1.685" another at 1.67". Does it make that much difference as far as how the seal seats properly?
I have had three seals replaced, a new bushing a good yoke and new U-joint and had my transmission rebuilt last week. And still that blasted output shaft seal still drops fluid!
I am doing the best I can to look at this positively. I keep thinking that all trucks leak a little. Even the trans guy that did the rebuild warned me that I may never get it to stop leaking. He said that is just the way it is. I thought that maybe the new seal might not be tight enough so I am asking about diameters. Anyway, it is late and I have to go to bed. Tanks for any suggestions.
Sorry Bill. I have a 1973 F100 with a 360 V8 and auto trans. I assume from the work that I have had done and from what I have read on line that it has a C6 trans. The owner of the place that rebuilt the transmission said that many of this type have a "slip" yoke that spreads the wear. He said this one does not, that the seal basically spins on one spot. BTW, thank you for responding. I was hoping you would..... :-)
JP3, thank you! I think my neighbor next door might have a micrometer I can borrow. But I do remember that the mechanic that attempted a "fix" before the trans was rebuilt replaced the original yoke with a used one. He said that it was in very good condition (whatever that means) and used a micrometer to assure that the diameter was correct but I do not know what dims he went by. A lot of detective work here but I am on a mission to solve this! I most likely will replace the yoke with a brand new one and check the bushing like Bill suggested.
Bill, this is awesome!!!! I guess I would need to count the splines to get the correct yoke number then match that with the correct seal? Is it possible that they could have been ordering the incorrect seal for the yoke I have? Just a thought....
