I have a 89 F350 7.3 IDI, it has 98k on it and I just got it and this is my first idi. It has been running great until the other night I was letting my truck idle and run the headlights for my buddy to use while he was doing something. I went inside for an hour while he was out there with it. He came in and told me that it started to idle rough and than it shut off. After that it hasn’t started again until this morning for maybe about 10 seconds. It cranks just fine but nothing happens. We thought it ran out of fuel due to my gauges working incorrectly. We put fuel in it but still wouldn’t kick over. There was exhuast coming out of the pipe just fine. We tried to see if there was fuel in the filter by using the shrewder valve but no fuel came out of the valve. But there was fuel in the filter. I also checked to see if there was fuel in the injector pump by opening the little cover on the side of the injector pump, there was fuel in there. I’m so confused if anyone can help that’d be awesome. Thank you
How much fuel was the gauge showing when it died? If it was 1/4 tank or below, it could have sucked air if the pickup in the tank is bad, very very common problem. After putting fuel in, how much have you cranked it? It may take some time to get all the air out. Don’t crank to much so you don’t burn up your starter. I’d say 20 seconds crank then rest for 2 minutes. Make sure batteries are good as if they got week while cranking it may not be turning the engine over fast enough to bust off.
You mentioned the shredder valve on the side of the filter housing. Have someone crank it while you push the valve in and see if any air comes out while cranking. Hold the valve till air quits comming out. If it has an Electric pump, just turn key on and press shredder valve.
The filter will usually have a lot of fuel in it even if it runs out of fuel or starts sucking air. Since the fuel enters and exits the top of the filter, any air will rise up to the top of the filter, get to the injection pump and kill the engine leaving the filter almost full.
If you still get air out of the shredder valve after a couple trys, you either have a bad fuel line from tank to lift pump on passenger side of the engine, the your tank selector switch is selected to the empty tank or not working or the lift pump itself went bad.
Tell us what you find and let us know and We can go from there.
I had a very similar problem a few weeks ago with my truck. It’s a 92 and was pretty much all stock when it got it. I had it at idle for maybe 30 min it shut down and wouldn’t start so I just let it sit for 2 days where it died until I found time to mess with it. I found my fuel shut off switch was not functioning properly it would come on for a few moments truck would start then die. I noticed I didn’t hear the click when the key was turned... Then the gp controller died on me the very next day, I just did away with the controller and went with a good heavy duty push button switch. If it’s a little bit chilly out don’t even bother try to start without gps. I learned the hard way and toasted a starter. Check for air intrusion, listen for the click on the fuel switch and make sure she’s got voltage. And check the air filter for nests. I know it sounds far fetched but if you got a ton of eggcorns and leaves on top of your intake you’ll be happy you too a look.
My guess is it ran out of fuel. Having fuel in the filter and pump doesn't mean there's not air in there too preventing it from starting. Have someone crank it while you hold the Schrader pressed. Once you have fuel and not air coming out release it and it should start within about 30 seconds of cranking time. Heed the warnings already given about not cooking the starter. Could be that the lift pump failed, if so you'll find out when trying to bleed because nothing will be coming out. I don't know if a failed pump diaphragm on these drops fuel on the ground or if it goes into the engine, if the latter and it failed an oil change should be next on the list.
The front tank on my van runs out at a little under 1/4 tank, and it's not the gauge. I haven't dropped the tank yet to investigate but I've read that there's an extension tube or something like that in the tanks that can fall off or break. When I forget and run out I bleed it by cranking for a couple seconds then quickly going to the front to press the valve....repeatedly, pain in the butt. Other way without help is to loosen the Schrader and just crank for a bit, then retighten it once it's bled.
Hey guys so we got the new lift pump in it and it finally turned on but now it’ll run for a little while but once the temp increases it just cuts off, the first time I was driving it and I lost throttle and than it just died. Then yesterday I was driving it around it was running fine but than the temp went up again and it just died. I’m guessing my injector pump is bad. Idk though if y’all could help that’d be awesome. Thank you
Make sure you don’t have the fuel solonoid and advanced solonoid wires backwards on the injection pump. The fuel solonoid will be hot all the time with key on and the advanced solonoid will be hot till engine warms up.
if they are backwards, it will die when engine gets warm.
easy check is see if you have power to the front most terminal on the drivers side of the injection pump closest to the gear housing when it dies.
