Alternator removal

Happy new years, havent be on for some time but could really use help on my alternator. I’ve a FE 390 H code from a 1972 F-100.

Is there anyway to loosen the belt? If so where exactly. I got the short bottom bolt out but the top bolt

You need to get the top bolt loose.

The alternator pivots on the lager long bolt that you missed in your thought processing of loosing it.
That you've learned the small bolt is basely that locks the belt adjustment in to place until the pivot bolt can be torqued to specs.

Ps be careful not to over tighten the small bolt as it can strip the threads out.
Also one of the biggest helps that any one can have is buying a manual book for almost all the things you want to know is in a motor manual & the owners glove hand book.

Is your Belt upside down ? the cogs (grooves) normally face the groove in pulleys

If you take the lower bolt off the bracket then try rotating the whole alternator a little. Most likely the aluminum spacer between the alternator and the block has seized on to the bolt. It will require lube, some choice words of your pleasure, maybe some sweat and time to get it loose. If you can get it freed up take the bolt and wire brush the pants off it and coat it with some anti-seize before putting it back together.

Believe it or not WD40 isn't particularly swell at loosening old rusty nuts and bolts. Sure, it's better than nothing but not by much. I use WD40, but not for this. Try Liquid Wrench. Bang on the nut or bolt a little with a hammer, to break the rust bonds and product will wick better where it needs to go. Check the next day, after soaking a few times.

The best stuff that I've found to date to get off stuck/rusty nuts and bolts is a 50/50 mixture of automatic tranny fluid and acetone. Shake well before each use, spray or pour on, let it sit for maybe 15 min (longer on really crusty stuff) and try your luck. DO NOT USE WHILE SMOKING, OR NEAR FLAMES, OR HOT SURFACES!!!!!!! I have yet to find a connector that this didn't work on. Sometimes I had to re-apply and wait overnight, but it always has worked.

That belt is on correctly. I have seen in the past one of the aftermarket belt companies made a series of belts where the outside was cogged like that. I wanna say Gates. I dunno why they did.
On the bolt, clean all that grease and gunk out of the split in the alternator spacer. Then spray a penetrant of your choice there. Using the split to get the penetrant straight to the bolt. Like PB Blaster or a 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF. The latter being better.
