Is it an early 04 or late 04 truck (ie do you have an 03 engine)?

I went with a bulletproofdiesel. Great quality product. Go with one that has a metal impeller imo. I've heard the oem plastic ones can come apart and I didn't want another risk.

I believe that the early 04's had the 90mm impellors. The late 04's will have the (better) 100mm design. To upgrade from a 90mm pump to a 100mm pump (which you are not doing) you would have needed a front cover also. I was just checking.

I really don't have a strong opinion. I don't think the OEM's are all that bad, but that is just me. Having said that, I am running one from BulletProofDiesel .... mainly because I was one of several folks that was given the pump to test. I like it, good quality! I certainly will recommend it based on my experience.

Alliant has a metal impeller, quite different from oem, and around 200 bucks cheaper than BPD. Bullet proof diesel's are are identical to the plastic oem only metal.

There are several factors in water pumps that are important, but you can't really evaluate them -
pumping capacity (gpm and discharge pressure)
impellor balance
bearing quality and longevity

IMO a plastic impellor isn't a bad idea really, it's just that you need the right kind of plastic and it needs to attach securely (which the early pumps did not). Not sure how an individual can evaluate that though. I do know that the aluminum impellor in the BPD pump holds up VERY well. I also trust them to use quality components.

Almost two decades ago there was an interesting discussion between two engineers well versed in water pump design, I think on TDS. Reading the nuances about cavitation around impeller design and seals in the bearings pretty well sold me on getting OE pumps unless it was certain any aftermarket company back engineered the design exactly. But that's just me.

Airtex used to be the company that manufactured the 7.3L water pumps, not a clue who did the 6.0L. As Mark stated, if you do plastic well it will not be a problem. But that's why there are suffix part number changes on OE parts. It's a maturing process until the part is no longer going o the assembly line.

My original pump was working fine when I replaced it @ 160k miles, I put a Motorcraft back in. I'm sure BPD makes a good product but I don't see anything that makes it better than oem.
