Hey guys I’m having a hard time finding reviews and trucks that have done the mass air conversion from SD. I’m at a cross road with my truck right now. I’m holding back on spending money on the motor cause I’m leaning towards dropping a 3.9 Cummins in it for the mileage and power. But if a mass air conversion is really going to open it up I’ll got that way.
Last spring I put gt40p heads, headers, msd coil and rotor, edelbrock intake, and a torquey cam (can’t rmember exactly what one) and all that definitely helped for power and mileage. But I still want more. So is the mas air going to blow me away or is it just going to be a drop in the bucket?
At the end of the day, what you have built so far is a maximized version of the stock setup - which has advantages and limits.
A mass air conversion will get you close to maximizing your setup but it will not be earth shattering. Only other step in terms of management would be a custom tune.
I would look into deeper gears, and then if not satisfied look at a stroker kit before I contemplated a Cummins swap in an F150. Forced induction is a possibility as well...
What did you think of the Edelbrock 3881 and GT40 head combination?
Ok thanks for the reply I should have mentioned that the cam technically isn’t compatible with SD. I’m planning on doing 4:10s this summer.
I put the heads cam and headers in at the same time and there was more power for sure but I wasn’t happy with it. So bought the intake a few weeks later. The intake was a game changer. If I had to do it again I probably wouldn’t have done the cam and just did heads intake and headers. The intake made power from idle and all the way into higher rpms. And it’s nice that I can take off the passenger side valve cover with it still on
If I had to do it again I probably wouldn’t have done the cam and just did heads intake and headers.
They all work together- if you had NOT changed the cam, the rest wouldn't have worked so well.
I too am interested in the answer to this question, as standard internet lore says that the
speed density system really doesn't respond as well to breathing mods like you've done.
Especially a cam with some overlap.
Yeah the stock 5.8 intake is restrictive even with stock heads. Your motor would run better overall with a MAF conversion but don't expect any MPG gains.. it could even end up using more gas as the SD system is probably lean in spots now.
I Feel like it would help out with mpg’s as well but I don’t know for sure. When I got the truck it was only getting about 550km out of both tanks. Now it’s nearly 800km
Don't do the swap for mpg gains, you'll be sorely disappointed.
Now, the swap and a *good tune* would probably yield an improvement, but again, you've already made the setup so much more efficient over stock that what you've done already *is* the bulk of the improvement.
The 351 was always a gas hog in these trucks. With your improvements what kind of mileage are you getting? Town/Highway?
With my 302 in my other '95, 3.31 gears it would get 19-20 mpg on the highway, flat road, 65 mph cruising. My current '95 only gets 17~ with 3.08 gears.
