Hello everyone. I have a 1993 F-150 XLT with a 5.0 and a E40D transmission. I found this mass air conversion kit made by Ford Racing. It says I need to install that before I do any performance modifications to my truck. This is it on the Jegs website. http://www.jegs.com//cgi-bin/ncommer...25&prmenbr=361 On the catalog it says it's for 1987-93 trucks. On the Jegs website however it says it's for 1987-90 trucks. Which is correct? And why do I need this $689 part before I can do performance modifications?
You can do some modifications with the stock system, but when you get to things that change the airflow characteristics of the engine, like a cam, the stock computer isn't able to run the engine correctly. With the mass air conversion, the new computer uses input from an air flow sensor to measure the amount of air entering the engine directly, where the stock computer just correlates the amount using the input from several sensors. You can still do modifications, but anything like a cam or possibly heads will require either a custom burned chip or a mass air conversion to make it run right. Check out http://fordfuelinjection.com , there is a lot of info about how EFI works.
Ahhh okay. From the looks it if I wouldn't be able to install a new cold air intake system made by K&N. The Mass Air system better add some horsepower too.
Yes you can do a K&N modification, but those don't really do much. There are some speed density friendly cams available. There are pleanty of people making big power on SD, but it's more difficult because the computer needs custom chips to re-program it. If you plan on doing some intake/head/cam work, go with the MAF kit. It in itself will gain a good amount of power. I just did the swap myself and got a used kit for 400 (its the FMS one). That gain in power will also improve your gas mileage. Do a search for "MAF conversion" and "MAF conv" or simliar, there are many threads on this.
Oh cool. I looked at a Vortech supercharger for my truck. It came with it's own air box and everything. Would I be able to stick the mass air flow sensor from the Ford Racing kit onto the super charger's air box? That's what has me worried. I don't want this Ford Racing MAF conversion to prevent me from sticking on a super charger.
