I bought a dash cam which plugs into a power port (what we used to call a cigarette lighter). The camera is supposed to mount up high behind the mirror so I thought I might splice in a powerport and put it into the overhead console to avoid draping a long cord and having it hanging down from the mirror. I'm not very good with electronics so I'm wondering if any of you fellas who are can either approve or disapprove of the idea and if I need to add anything, a fuse for instance, to make it work. Thanks for any and all help.
I’m no electrician either, but I wouldn’t think there was anything powerful enough in the area to tap into.
If the existing plug in cord is long enough (or buy an extension if not), maybe just tuck it in/tape it along the headliner, then down the front window pillar to under the dash, then over to the power port.
I'm about to do exactly the same, I want a permanently live outlet so will just run a fused supply to a triple socket that will locate in the overhead console, 2 x 12v ports & another which has 2 x 5v usb ports which means that I can leave a phone or whatever needs charging out of sight as well as not having a plethora of cables everywhere .
I did contemplate using the power from the overhead display but doubt it would handle the power requirements.
So I'm thinking about running a wire direct from the passenger side battery + pole to the powerport. Other than perhaps an inline fuse on the hot wire to the powerport, would you think that I'll need anything else?
