2018 has more power

Can anyone confirm that the 18's have 10 more hp and 10 more # ft of torque? If so what was the change to get it?

Correct, the 2018's get the updated Powerstroke with 10+10, bringing the numbers to 450 horsepower and 935 lb-ft of torque. The power bump comes from a redesigned cylinder head and some software tweaks, which allows for some higher boost numbers relative to the increased head flow.

There was some marketing info that suggested there was a change to the heads.

Pretty much the last thing the trucks need.

Work on those QC bugs.

In modern engines, increased efficiency typically results in increased power.

Its simply good business to practice "continuous improvement". Get complacent and get passed by your competition.

I am sure that QA and QC are not being compromised by continued engine development.

It's nothing you will notice between a '17 and '18 truck. Ford says it bump the hp and tq so who knows if its true. In a 8-9k pound truck they would have to bump the numbers 75hp and 100tq to feel any difference.

The power and torque increases have negligible actual effect, but do wonders on marketing materials. Ford is once again best in class diesel horsepower and torque.

The redesigned heads are interesting - you don't need to change cylinder heads to get +10/+10.

My assumption was the head change and HP/TQ increases were independent changes that occurred at the same time.
The head change I am guessing was to fix the ticking noise and whatever other issues
The HP/TQ increase was purely for marketing to be best in class.

Just happened to occur at the same time. As others said to get 10+10 can all be done in software.

Could be that the minor engine changes will provide the basis for the next benchmark of 1000 ft.lbs of torque.

I raced a '17 and blew him away in my '18. hahahaha jk

I thought it was only 5hp. Agreed, a rig which weighs as much as these would need a larger bump to make any real difference. 1.07% gain in torque ain't much.

Could be, but there is no inherent weakness in these heads. Many people are tuned to make a lot more power and well more than 1000lb-ft on even 2011 model year 6.7's. In fact, I would say Ford has one of the strongest heads in terms of bolts, gasket thickness, total lack of valve bridges, and unique flow design.

Nope. Chevy's new L5P Duramax makes 445HP and Cummins bumped their 6.7L up to 930lb-ft. So Ford needed +10 on each measurement for a successful marketing coup.

Troy, agreed on the present powerstroke platform with tuning mods.I know a handful of guys who are running tuned 6.7's with no mechanical issues at all and well over 100k miles. Maybe just a little insurance on Ford's part in terms of reliability and durability.
