Backup Camera Wiring Question

Hello! I apologize for asking the question that has been asked before. I searched the forum and could not find the solution.

I wired up a backup camera to my Edge Insight CTS2 monitor and it works. I hooked up the hot wire to the reverse light and the camera works like a charm when I shift to reverse BUT the Edge CTS2 needs the camera to be wired to a “constant, keyed on power source”. For the camera to turn on, I have to click on “accessories” from the main menu on the CTS2 and go to the “camera” screen, and then the monitor will recognize the camera. What a pain in the neck. So every ignition cycle I have to repeat the same process on the CTS2.

I am looking for the easiest “keyed on hot” wire to hook this beauty of a camera up to. I am terrible with electrical work, so the easiest connection I can do. I started reading about relays and fuses and all kinds of stuff and I just get confused.

My truck is a 2005 F250, crew cab short bed. There are some wires toward the fire wall entry that supposedly are for hookup? Are these keyed on or do I need a wire under the dash? It looks like I can use a 10 amp fuse in the fuse box under the dash and plug in a fuse adapter? Is that the easiest method? Should I just find a “keyed on” 10 amp fuse and replace that fuse with the fuse adapter? If I remove one of those fuses will it screw up any other electrical work?

Maybe just by posting I sparked some electrons in my brain!!!! I can get a fuse tap adapter and connect it to the 10 amp “customer access” fuse under the dash, yes??!!!!

Did you get the Edge camera or another? I tried the same thing with a camera on my horse trailer and could never get it to work more than intermittently. The Edge will fail to recognize the camera unless the camera is powered up when the Edge initializes. Pain in the XXX. At least that's my experience with it. Hope it works out for you.

I bought a $30 backup camera from Amazon because it looks like the Edge camera was overpriced. I think that if I pick up a 10 amp fuse tap/adaptor and use fuse #29 labeled “10A customer access” then it should work flawlessly.

It always takes my CTS2 several seconds after start up to boot, so it should recognize the power to the camera. I will try it soon and post back.

I didnt want to post cuss words on here but yes, I was swearing when the CTS2 didn’t recognize the camera on the second day.

I had this same issue, you have to wire it a switched power source. I ran a wire up the frame/up the firewall/under the dash and tapped into "customer access wire". This solved my problems. Camera shows as soon as you put it in reverse.


p.s. I used a $30 backup camera as well

Thanks! You didn’t have to wire to an upfitter switch did you? You tapped into the 10A customer access wire?

Yes sir, just tape into the customer access wire.

Ok. Last question and sorry to bug you. Is there a wire going out from the fuse box that is blunt end and I splice to that wire? Or do I get a fuse adapater and plug it into the customer access fuse port?

The customer access wire should be near the radio, mine had a piece of tape with wording on it. Do a quick good search I’m sure you can find a picture of it. Look up under the dash and you should be able to find it easily. I spliced directly into this blunt cut wire.

SOLVED

For future people doing the same install, this is how you wire up a $30 backup camera to the Edge CTS2 on a Ford 6.0.

- Do not use the reverse light bulb as a power source. The Edge CTS2 requires a “keyed on” power source, so the camera will always have power when the truck is running.
- Route the RCA cable along the frame, up through the engine compartment, through the firewall and under the dash and connect the RCA cable to the Edge CTS2.
- Run the power and ground wire along the same path as the RCA cable and run under the dash.
- Remove the secondary small glove box under the radio.
- Pull back the white insulation and you will see some taped up wires there. The “customer access” wire is white with a blue stripe and it is labeled. It has a blunt end and tape on it.
- Connect the power wire from the camera to the customer access wire and connect your ground.

Works like a charm! Thanks for your help guys.

FYI. I picked up one of those “add a fuse” connectors and initially tried powering the wire directly to the fuse box under the dash in the 10 amp fuse 29 for the customer access wire and it worked great, however the fuse box plastic cap protector would not click back into place with this “add a fuse” contraption, so I then connected it directly to the customer access wire under the radio. It was easy.

Glad you got it taken care of! As far as the ground wire, you can tap into the 7 way plug so you do not have to run an extra length of wire to the front of the truck.

Very good point. I thought about doing that but I had a bunch of wire and figured that I should give it a good ground in the cab. Not sure if it makes a difference or not.
