Dual plane intake manifold is better for the street. Single planes are only good for Wide Open Throttle and high RPMs. Probably don't want to go much bigger than 650 CFM with the carb.
I have a 1979 f150 with a 400 in it and I was wondering what you would suggest for an intake and carb for best preformance?
A Weiand Action Plus (PN 8010) dual plane intake, a 650 cfm Holley with vacuum secondaries, and a 14x3 open element air cleaner housing with free-flowing air filter.
There are lots of options... How good are you at tuning a carb?
Edelbrock and Weiand both make new intakes for the 400 (or 351m, same intake). You can also find intakes for 400's used. Mose used ones will be Edelbrock but there are some odd ball intakes out there too. For ease of use I would stick to the current production style ones (used or new).
Carb wise there is the carter/edelbrock AFB choice that is pretty good and very simple. After that you have holley type carbs from several manufactures that have more room to tune in but may take more effort to tune. There is also the option to run a gm quadrajet (edelbrock makes new ones). This carb is suppose to be an excelant mileage carb but is very difficult to tune.
I run a carter on my 400 but I think I will be moving to a quadrajet or holley soon
For best performance, a small 4 bbl and dual plane intake can help. Other things that complement would be distributor & ignition curve set up for performance, cam timing set up for performance (factory used retarded cam timing... a "straight up" timing set, preferably degree'd in can help) and dual exhaust or better headers + dual exhaust.
My brother just put a weiand on his 400 with a edelebrock carb, seems to really like it. As far as a 600ish carb, i had zero real experience with them and tried both the Holley and the Edelbrock, I found the Brock more user friendly and easier to tune, but thats just me, its kind of like asking what the best caliber rifle round is.......
