I prefer Holley, but that's an age old debate, but I don't think brand really makes that big of a difference. I've had holleys, carter's, eddy's, etc. all run well and all run badly. The biggest thing is to make sure you're not over carbed and tuned properly.
On if you plan to do both the intake and carb or use an adapter to allow a 4bl to bolt onto the stock intake.
Matching the intake to the carb is always a good way to go.
Square bore or spread bore etc.
Kinda depends on how much you want to spend or what parts you have access too.
I am running an edlebrock dual plane intake with a holly 670 Truck avenger on my 400 and it was a huge improvement of the stock and other carb I tried.
I have the edelbrock intake, and I run a 670 holley street avenger, and I really like it. I have a friend that has a built 400 too, and he has the thunder series 650 edelbrock and really likes it.
What are you doing with the truck? Hot street, off roading? For a off road carb the truck avengers work great, although they are nothing more than a regular holley with the vent tube crossed over, the edelbrock/carter carbs work pretty good too.
My opinion on the holley edelbrock debate, if your going for max power and don't mind making little adjustments, go holley, if your going for reliability and set it and forget it, the edelbrock/carter it the way to go, I've had ones that "needed a rebuild" and all they really needed was a good cleaning and they worked like new. They really are great for a daily driver.
If you're going daily drive, just use the carb you have. I've got a PDF for any 2100 series Motorcraft/Autolite/Ford carburetor.
It's very detailed and it comes with a full tear-down, re-assembly exploded view. If you need it, just let me know by PMing me or just search it up on the forums.

the truck avenger, and street avenger are a new bread of holley and come just as ready and trouble free as an edelbrock. I think new cheap edelbrocks are a mistake. I have seen two different people have brand new carbs break and flood out there motors, and one was breaking an engine in and dumped about a quart of gas in the motor before we got it stopped. He took the carb apart and fixed it, drained the oil to get the gas out, put new oil in, and fired it up and it did the same thing. He ended up barrowing my demon to finish the break in so he wouldn't ruin the cam, and fill the oil with gas again. I think older edelbrock, and carters are a different class. Demons are great carbs too, and with the new road demon class, they are trouble free too. My mighty demon race carb was trouble free after setting the floats and 4 corner idle.
Barry Grant has come along way with the demon carbs, while I've never had one, performance wise I would gladly use one, even over a holley, just my .02
