2009 towing empty?
I have a 09 F150, 5.4. I was towing my car trailer today in overdrive. Trailer empty, 18'. Should I have put it in tow mode for an empty trailer? It towed fine, no excessive down shifting. Also, I will be moving a 1000 lb lawn tractor, same question. Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it, unless the transmission is hunting around for the right gear. Same with the lawn mower. Tow mode will hold the gears a bit longer and give you some engine braking when stopping. Give it a try next time to see what you think.

If it "tows fine [with] no excessive down shifting", regardless of what/how heavy it is, I don't worry about it. Moderate loads in the mtns require tow mode whereas the exact same load at the coast does not. I just play always it by ear.

I always tow in OD, you will get the feel as you experiment with your driving style, tow/haul increases line pressure in the trans and holds the gears abit longer and also doesnt allow TC lockup the same so mileage will hurt. Just do what the truck is telling ya but you wont hurt the trans, if the fluid gets hot you will know.
