No crank
OK since we don't know your experience level - or what you've done so far to eliminate possibilities - you have to check that battery is serviceable. When a battery gets old or reaches the end of its useful life it can still measure 12+ volts, dash lights work, radio, etc, but is unable to supply enough current under the load of starting the engine. How old is the battery? Has it run down lately? Have you tried charging it?
Lots of things to do at this initial stage, they mostly revolve around making sure battery is good, and charged, cables and connections are clean and tight.
Measure voltage while cranking is a good test. Also, check to see if any of the cables get hot, this is a sure sign a connection is loose. Simple things like that.
Do the headlights work? Nice and bright? What happens to the headlights, if you try to crank the engine over? Just take it one piece at a time and you'll get it figured out.
Someone else will have to give the details, since I don't know exactly where your connector is, or if it's one of the simpler 4 to 6 wire models, or one with 783 wires on it! As a '96, I suspect the latter.
Ok, so it's probably only got 8 or 10 wires, but it's not the old simple 4-wire switch with only two wire colors.
But either way, it keeps the ignition switch from getting power to the starter relay under the hood when you turn the key to START
Check for loose or corroded connections at the starter relay (solenoid thingy), check for loose or corroded cables to the battery and starter, and even try jiggling the transmission shift lever around while you turn the key to see if that helps. Put it in Neutral and try again.
Of course, it could be other things as well, but that's a place to start at least.
