Hi all,
I have an 85' F150 that I am trying to research the vin on in an attempt to get a title for it. The printed tag inside the door is faded enough I can't read it any more and the riveted vin plate under the windshield is about the same way. The painted background has flaked up making it impossible to read the numbers correctly. The dash pad is pretty bad so i even took a knife and trimmed it back so i could spray some flat black paint up in there. After that dried a bit I took a thinner soaked rag and attempted to wipe the paint from the tops of the numbers but it is still real difficult. Anyone have any suggestions (short of busting the windshield out) of anything else i can try? Would the vin be anywhere else on the truck that i might try to locate? If I can get this worked out I am just gonna go ahead and part the truck out.
Have you tried a scrub pad / sponge and soap water on the VIN plate?
Maybe a little vinegar on it to see if it will clean it up also. Maybe with the scrub pad?
They say there is part VIN on the frame. They say it is on the top of the right frame rail but cant remember if it was on under the cab floor area or engine bay area by ALT?
I want to say under the cab floor and only be seen with a mirror.
I did not know of this when I had my truck torn apart and never looked at my parts truck frame and cant as I gave it away.

Take a wide putty knife and pry the trim off around the windshield. Then take a metal guitar string or piano wire, make a place to force it through the thick sticky tape that holds the windshield in place, and then get another person to help and saw back and forth through the sticky stuff to try and release and pull the windshield out.
Take a good look at the windshield, it may be in bad shape and not worth saving anyway. There is a chance you might break it pulling it out.
Get ready, once you do get the vin you will have to go down to the DMV and give them the info, and they usually send a registered letter to the last known owner on file. If they do not answer the letter in time, fine, it's now your truck. If they are cooperative, it's still your truck. If they answer the letter and want their truck back, then say by by to your truck.
Hi all,

Does truck still have the original engine in it, and if so, what is it? My 1984 F150 with 302 had the last 8-9 digits of the VIN stamped in the back of the block, just behind the intake manifold, above the bell housing. If it's a 300/6, maybe one of the other guys would know where the VIN might be stamped. If you can figure out the last 6-8 digits where the sequential build numbers are, we can figure out the rest of the digits.
It's very difficult to see, but most of these trucks have the vin stamped on the frame, behind the front wheel below the pass side hood hinge area on top of the frame, were the frame kicks up in front of the cab.
Well spent a little while this morning working on it. and have it all now except I am a little unclear on the 6th digit. Does anyone know if it should be a letter or a number? I think it is a one but it might be a "T"
I ended up taking a razor knife and cutting the padded dash back (it was toast anyway) so i could get my hand it there better. Took flat black paint again and sprayed the entire plate. Once it was dry I took a rag with some thinner and lightly wiped away the tops of the vin. Also had to clean the windshield so I could see thru it again.

This truck is the 300 big 6

I am going to take a look and see if I can find that as well.

It is most likely a 1. The 5th, 6th, and 7th digits should be F1T for your truck, which indicate Regular cab F150 4x2.
The first part of your VIN should be F25DF15Y4FCAxxxxx (Just guessing on the 4).

Is that what you have?
I think it is 2FTDF15Y9FCA45699 The vin decoder brings it to being an 85 with the 300/6 but did not say much else. Carfax says it has 3 records but I did not but the report to see what they were in case I do have the wrong numbers

I think you're good to go.
Thanks for the added help. Now off to the Title process to see if it remains mine. Luckily I don't have a lot invested. I was told it was part of an estate that was already closed out and they did not want to bother with it. I bought it for parts but only rust I have found on the entire truck (other than surface rust) is two spots in the driver side fender. It is auto with air as well and I hate to cut it up if I can get the title straightened out.

Hopefully they will help you out now that it has been years since the event. Usually if a person passed away and the title was in their name, someone with authority has to go the county or the state to get a death certificate. Then the person with the authority of the estate (maybe the executor?) has to get it cleared up with the DMV before it can officially change hands. It varies from state to state. Just tell the DMV what is going on and they will walk you through it.
Looks like everything is going to be approved for a title. I guess I should have cleaned the truck out a little more earlier. I pulled all the trash out of it looking for an old registration to help confirm I had the vin written correctly but did not do an indepth cleaning. Last evening I was vacuuming under the bench seat and noticed paper in the bottom of the seat cushion........yup. Pulled the seat out this morning and looks like the build sheet. At least I was able to confirm the numbers.
