I've got a 96 50oz 302 buy my parts are from 73 so it's a 28oz harmonic balencer and flywheel, so what would happen if I through those older parts on there? Would the engine just rev too high or would I actually break something important? Any help is appreciated thanks
It would shake you out of the truck. No lie.
So performance balancing, such as you do when the engine is being machined, is very good, but not a requirement for running.
Your idea of using mismatched parts however is a complete non-starter. Don't even think about it.
Besides, if you're swapping in a used engine, you need to renew certain things anyway. It's just common sense so you don't have to do it later.
And what if your timing marks for the 302 balancer don't line up with the timing pointer on the engine? Or are you swapping over the old timing cover too? Ford used at least three different sets of timing marks and pointer combinations, so that's always something to be conscious of.
Even the manufacturers put the wrong parts in the boxes sometimes, because they all look the same to some people.
Oh, and back to your balance, when performance balancing we're talking down to fractions of a GRAM. The roughly 22 OUNCES of misbalance at that point would be the eventual death of the engine at some point.
If you could stand to run it that long that is.
I've seen the wrong parts used, and while it idled someone normally, but the time you were at 1200 to 1400 rpm the guy KNEW he'd made a big mistake!
