On my 2004 supercrew 2wd, is the speed sensor on the differential the one responsible for an intermittent speedo? My speedo mostly sits at zero but once in a while will come to life. Would this be the rear axle sensor? I’ve got 225k on the truck and the differential has been worked on a couple times.
More likely, it's the cluster if you're not having any transmission shifting or performance issues. You can use a scan tool or equal to monitor the PID for VSS and see if the sensor is reporting correct information to the PCM or not.
Go into the HEC's test mode and monitor the speedometer data and see if correlates to the speedometer indicator or not. If the displayed data is correct but the actual speedometer isn't displaying the same speed, it's the speedometer that is faulty.
Do the proper diagnostics and avoid the impulse to just hang random parts on the truck trying to get lucky.
