I drove in a blizzard last winter after installing my Tymar. I checked the element and it was perfectly dry. Same after rain storms. Since it is tucked back behind the batter it seems to be sheilded from the elements.
Originally posted by johnsdiesel If you go to the diesel stop and do a search you will eventually come up with a thread with a lot of posts by Dale (Tymar). It gets very technical, but basically Dale gives information on testing methods and suggests that tests are "flawed" based on the methods used. Do a search, read it, and draw your own conclusion.
Even if a test came out that showed that the AFE did indeed flow more air, which I doubt, why would you want to sacrifice filtration? That's the main reason that a lot of guys have done the do-it-yourself open element intake or gone with the Ford AIS.
I don't think all the flow charts and marketing by the people who produce the products mean as much to me at least as does real world info. The above example of the same truck running the AFE and Tymar and the differences in performance is a good example of how they flow.
The shop owners I have talked to say that if you look at independant flow charts that the AFE will always out flow the Tymar.
You say it sacrifices filtration................others I have talked to say it filters just as good...........and people who run the AFE check their intakes and don't have any signs of poor filtration.....if they did they probably would switch.
I just today used a 6" piece of 4" exhaust pipe and a new K&N Cone filter. THe filter was pricey but the pipe was $3. Took about ten minutes to change and I had instant results. My acceleration is even better and the sound on the filter side is suhhhhweet..you can really hear the turbo whine!
Sorry to dredge up this discussion again but I have a problem finding and comparing filter & intake kits for my '96 F250 7.3L PSD. It seems that AFE has a part # for the full intake kit but K&N does not. Do I want to even consider K&N based on the discussions in this thread or should I stick with either Tymar or AFE? What is the best place to buy either of these kits online?
I'd stick with either the tymar or AFE.... the problem with the K&N filters is that with the turbo charged engine, it sucks so hard from the turbo that too much dust gets into the engine. For a gasser, its probably not as big a deal, but you don't want to lose your $5000 diesel engine because of an air filter.
you can do a search at the top of the page for tymar and get all the info you could ever stand to read. I just installed mine about a week and 1/2 ago. I did a home made version...which you will also find info on witht he search. you can either contact dale at tymarperformance.com or you can make your own for $40 -$50. good luck and let us know what you decide. The afe is a good product too, and if I wasn't going with Tymar, I probably would go with the AFE. cost wise Tymar is 1/2 of the AFE setup and in my opinion just as good if not better at filtration.
what is the difference between the afe, k&n, air raid and airforce one. Dont they use the same type guaze filter or is it the size of the filter that makes these different. Does anybody have any real world info on the voliant intake.
FYI, I went with the Tymar intake system after speaking with Dale at Tymar and doing extensive research comparing efficiency and flow between the Tymar (Donaldson Media), AFE, and K&N. For the price Dale is charging, I could not do it myself and the Donaldson Media does flow much better with a higher efficiency rating.
