Looking for suggestions on a new or rebuilt turbo for a 2004 6.0 Excursion. Door tag says Mfg 9/03
Mostly stock, EGR delete, may upgrade exhaust later and will eventually get a head job. 180k
I was referred to the 6.0 section for more information on good/bad with Powermax turbo.
What's wrong with your current turbo? If it's sticking you can just clean it. Otherwise I am planning on going with a KC turbo when I get around to it.
A simple clean job should be quick and easy. Even paying someone to do should only be 2-3hours to R&R the turbo and clean it. Better $200-$300 than $2500 for a new turbo.
Also, the y-pipe and connections need to be inspected for leaks or you will spend money on a turbo and be in the same spot.
If u were closer I would be willing to help walk you through...
Mechanic said he would charge 3hr plus parts. His friend rebuilds turbos and has a TurboMax for around $800
But a good cleaning seems to be the general consensus here. Thanks guys
Lots of choices on Ebay at all diffferent price points. Do you have the 10 blade turbo or no?
The problem with some of the Ebay stuff is the quality.
Also if he has the early turbo it will have a bit more "sound" to show off with.
texinwa Got a invite to come on over to the Washington State Chapter of FTE if you would like to.
Here is the link and if you want to join you can also do that there also >>> https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum188/
I bought a new Garrett off ebay from River City Diesel for $750 a year ago. Mine had a lot of corrosion inside so new was the best option.
Some times that is the best option. I have a spare turbo that came off my old overheated engine that I replaced that I plan to use the KC turbo rebuild and stage 1.5 upgrade kit on.
Right now my turbo sticks some times but I can usually get it un-stuck by playing with the throttle pedal a bit to get it to wiggle loose.
I just need to get off my lazy butt and deal with it.
