I have never been happy with the height of the roof on my truck, I did not want to do a chop but rather lower the roof above the door frame. I could not find a lot of info out there on the process of doing but I had a idea of what to do. I found a few pictures on the web and figured I would just wing it (like most everything I do). All in all it went pretty well, the metal finishing could have benefitted from an English or planishing but I don't have those tools so I did the best I could with a hammer and dolly and some heat shrinking. I took some pictures along the way of how I did it and the tools I used.
Few pictures in hand and some layout fluid for my cut lines
4 cuts layed out
the jig saw worked well and the cuts off wheel finished up the rest
convertible?
removed the top in one peice then made the four cuts
shear worked fast to make these cuts
the rear was removed right at the seam so i just removed the spot welds
marking out the patch panels to fill in the gaps
this part was frustrating to get the fit right and prevent warping
i used tig rod and aluminum rulers i had the help keep the shape
I tig welded the joints so I would have a softer weld to planish out
Lots of tacks
get the fit up as close as possible.
jumped around to keep the warping down.
I used a shrinker to get the edges to fit up well
looks much better now, at least to me
some spot heat shrinking and hammer and dolly work to get the oil canning out
Looks good I have been eyeing the same idea but have decided against it as I have to draw the line somewhere or it will never get finished . It looks like a couple inches you eliminated so how much lower do you feel the roof will be ?
It's about 1 1/2" lower, every panel I touch needs some modification. 10 years later maybe I'll be done. This truck was all body worked and painted when I bought it, sat for many years after. Every time I strip off more paint i find another ****ty repair, I've got 90% of the paint off now so I'm getting close.
