Unhappy e40d(??) slipping (??)

hi, I purchased a 1997 f250 HD auto v8 5.8 gas almost a year ago and have been driving it daily. Couple of weeks ago it started to slip, I can hear a weird-high pitched noise coming from the center bottom of the truck (right around where the transmission is).
It speeds up normal until around 20 mph from a dead stop but it makes that noise until around 55. Accelerates really slowly after 20 and noise goes away almost completely on over drive or when I am pushing the throttle just a little (thus keeping the rev low).
I already checked the fluid, it is pink and does not smell burnt. Almost ever thread I read in here says if the transmission is slipping, the fluid should be dark and smell bad.
What else should I check before trying to find a place to replace the whole transmission?

I said e40d on the title because I believe that is the transmission this truck has but I am not sure about it.

PS: I changed the thermostat couple of weeks ago, it had a lower F thermostat installed, I replaced it with the original F. Now engine warms up (wasn't before) but I really do not think it overheats or anything in that manner.

Thank you very much in advance!

The first thing to do is to get the codes read. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.

It is an E4OD. That was the only automatic available in your truck.

check engine light is not on, would there still be codes stored?

all the dealers are pretty far away from me, let me try to find the post that explains how to read them with paper clip.

thank you!

Yes, there could be codes stored. Most transmission codes will not turn on the check engine light.

Do you have any independent shops near you? Most shops can read the codes.

That only worked through 1994. It will not work on your 1997.

You don't need any special tools to get codes from this truck, find the EEC test connector under the hood on the drivers side inner fender and put a jumper between the STI and Sig_Rtn pins, turn the key to run and codes will flash on the check engine light. If you cycle the key off and on again the sequence will start over so you can repeat untill you capture everything correctly.
If you want to take all the guess work out of it get yourself an Equus/Innova 3145 code reader, this unit comes with a code definitions handbook and isn't expensive... $20 or so.

I was able to read the code with the method you told me!
It blinks 3-3 big gap 1-3-3

some sources say 3-3 is stuck EGR valve but cannot find anything about 1-3-3 at all.

would bad EGR cause a weird noise and really bad performance?

Now you need to run the Key On Engine Running (KOER) tests.

After starting the engine wait for four flashes, which indicates it is an 8 cylinder. Then press the OD OFF button, press and release the brake pedal, and turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn in each direction.

I did it and got error 116, checked it online, it says coolant is not hot enough so I drove it around for couple of minutes, tried it again and got 111. online sources say it means system pass? :/

also I can give little bit more of the performance lack, if I put it on cruise at 55 and if there is a slight slope, it lowers the gears right away and makes that noise- similar to if you fill a bottle with sand and shake it.

I think I will also look into torque converter too. From what I read, that might cause the same symptoms as a bad transmission for example bad acceleration. So much fun(!)

I dont know if this info would help but the truck does the same noise when it is on Park also! Also there is a rumbling when I let the throttle go.

does this mean it is the t converter? Or there is a possibility of it being engine issue? Maybe it doesnt fire properly when the rpm is high or underload?
